You film the way everyone films: phone upright, one hand, thumb on the shutter. That is what Instagram wants, what TikTok wants, what your friends expect. Then you convert that clip to 3D, put on a headset, and the moment you have been waiting for is a narrow strip floating in the middle of your view.
It still works. There is still depth in it. But it is a fraction of what the same moment could have been, and the fix costs nothing: turn the phone sideways.
The simple reason: your eyes sit side by side
Hold a finger in front of your face and close one eye, then the other. Your finger jumps sideways. That jump is depth. It is the only thing your brain needs to know how far away something is, and it happens horizontally, because your two eyes sit next to each other and not one above the other.
A 3D video is built on exactly that. The file contains two pictures, one for your left eye and one for your right, and the difference between them is a small sideways shift. Everything in the conversion — every calculation we do — is about how far each object should move left or right.
So the axis that carries the depth is the horizontal one. When you film vertically you are keeping the axis your eyes cannot use and cropping away the one they need.
A headset is wide, not tall
Look straight ahead right now, without moving your head. You can see a lot to your left and right, and much less above and below. Headsets are built to match that: they show you far more width than height, because that is the shape of human vision.
A vertical video in a headset is a tall, narrow column with emptiness on both sides. And unlike your phone, you cannot rotate a headset to fix it. The video is simply there, in front of you, in the shape you gave it.
Depth needs something near and something far
This is the part people miss. 3D is not a filter you add to a picture; it is the distance between things. A shot only feels three-dimensional when there is something close, something in the middle, and something far away.
Film your child in the garden vertically and you get the child, a bit of grass and a lot of sky. Turn the phone sideways and the same shot gets the flowers in front, the child in the middle, the fence, the trees and the houses behind. Now there are layers, and layers are what you actually see in a headset. The conversion can only show depth that was there in the first place.
Four things that make a bigger difference than you would think
Hold it sideways. That is the whole trick, and it is the biggest single improvement you can make.
Put something close to the camera. A table edge, a railing, a person in the foreground. Without a near object there is nothing for the far ones to be far from.
Move slowly. Depth is calculated from what the camera sees, and a fast pan gives it very little to work with. A slow, steady move reads far better in 3D than a quick sweep.
Do not film straight into the sun. Heavy backlight flattens the picture into silhouettes, and a silhouette carries almost no depth information.
Already have a vertical clip you love?
Convert it anyway. It will work, it will get real depth, and it will look good — it just will not fill your view the way a landscape shot does. The advice here is for the next time you film, not a reason to leave the last two years of footage alone.
