Two of the most popular 3D video formats today are Full Side-by-Side (SBS) and MV-HEVC (Multiview High Efficiency Video Coding). Both deliver immersive stereoscopic experiences, but they take fundamentally different approaches to encoding — and the right choice depends on your use case.

What Is Full Side-by-Side (SBS)?

Full SBS is the most widely adopted format for 3D content across consumer VR headsets and platforms like YouTube VR.

How it works:

The video frame is split into two halves — the left-eye view on the left, the right-eye view on the right. Each half contains a full-resolution image rendered from a slightly different angle. When viewed through a VR headset, the brain fuses these two perspectives into a convincing sense of depth.

Advantages:

-Universal compatibility — works on Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, YouTube VR, and virtually every 3D-capable player
-Simple to preview, edit, and troubleshoot
-No special decoder or hardware required

Trade-offs:
-Larger file sizes, since both views are stored at full resolution
- Less efficient compression compared to newer formats
- Can be slow to stream on limited bandwidth

What Is MV-HEVC?

MV-HEVC (Multiview High Efficiency Video Coding) is an extension of the HEVC (H.265) standard, purpose-built for encoding multiple views with minimal redundancy.

How it works:
Instead of storing two complete frames, MV-HEVC encodes one full base view and a compact set of depth and motion differences needed to reconstruct the second view. This eliminates duplicate visual information between the two eyes.

Advantages:
- Up to 50% smaller file sizes compared to Full SBS at the same quality
- Designed for efficient streaming and storage
- Native support on Apple Vision Pro

Trade-offs:
- Limited player and platform support — not yet accepted on YouTube or most web-based players
- Requires compatible hardware or software decoders
- Harder to preview and edit in standard video tools
